The Moon, Mars & Tryfan

On September 9th, 2003, the moon and Mars rose at about 7.15 pm close together, Mars being very bright as its orbit had brought it very close to Earth.

The moon was rising to the southeast, which meant that from Y Garn, it would rise above Tryfan - the only mountain in Wales which you cannot climb with your hands in your pockets.

I packed my rucksack and set off. The weather was dry as I climbed past Cwm Idwal, but ominous clouds were rolling over the top of Y Garn. I camped in Cwm Clyd, pitching my tent so that I could lie in my sleeping bag with a good view of Tryfan, but there was little hope of photographing the moon and Mars in the gathering gloom.

The rain poured down and the wind blew all night, and the following morning, I was in the clouds. Waiting produced no improvement, so I struck camp and made my sodden way down the mountain. No photograph of a Moon and Mars rise, but my best yet of Tryfan.
