From our campsite on the isle of Yell, we looked down onto a sandy bay and a rocky headland, backed by dunes. We could see the remains of a Viking settlement protruding through the grass, among which were nesting rock pipits and ringed plovers.
Before the shore rose up from the headland to the cliffs, there was another beach consisting of pebbles that contained mica, glistening in the sunlight like jewels. As we browsed along the shore, comparing our beautiful stones, a pair of oystercatchers informed us, loudly and insistently, that the beach contained something else. We eventually found their nest, wonderfully camouflaged among the glistening boulders.
