Gannet on Noss

Gannets are stars. Graceful in flight, elegant on their cliff ledges, and stylish in shape and colour. First close encounters were by boat around the cliffs of the Isle of Noss, where the awesome height and unusual rock formations formed a perfect setting for the birds.

A gannet arrived on a ledge in front of us, and started making beautiful body gestures as he approached his mate on a nest. The sea surged around the cliffs as the tide turned, and our boat pitched and rolled in the swell, making it very difficult to keep the camera trained on the bird.
